From dining with sharks to condom-themed restaurants, and breathtakingly beautiful to downright disturbing, we've rounded up a couple of the weirdest food trends you won't believe exist! Prepare to be WOW-ed by these unique dining experiences and start adding them all to your bucket list. 📝
1) Eat off an actual human
Forget plates and bowls... People have started eating off of each other. 😱
Nyotaimori "Body" or "Naked" Sushi has evolved since the reign of the last emperor of Japan. This sushi-devouring experience in the US involves removing sushi from a human form for consumption. It can feature both male (nantaimori) or women (nyotaimori).
These servers are trained to lie still for hours. Then, they’re shaved, scrubbed from head to toe with fragrance-free soap and covered in sushi. If that's not impressive, I don't know what is. 🤔
2) Dine while on a secret mission
If you've always wanted to be a 007 in another life, you secretly can! Downtown Chicago's got a secret agent-themed nightclub called SafeHouse and it's full of surprises. Pro-tip: You'll want to order the exploding "Fat Bastard". 😎
The restaurant goes all-out with original props from James Bond movies and dives deep into the mysterious espionage experience. 🕵🏼 From the minute you pass the clearance test or enter via password (yes, there's a password), the fun begins with a pre-meal scavenger hunt, an escape phone booth, an electric chair that pops through the floor and sliding bookcases!
P.S. They recommend finding the secret exit - a good spy never leaves the same way they entered. 😏
3) Eat out of a toilet
Have you ever thought that chocolate soft serve looks like the poo emoji? 💩 Modern Toilet in Taiwan has taken that to the next level. At the world's first toilet themed restaurant, you get to sit on a toilet bowl (closed, of course) while you enjoy eating steak, shaved ice, hotpot and curry out of tiny squat toilets, urinals and toilet bowls... Holy crap.
They started out selling swirly chocolate ice cream in containers shaped like mini toilets and gained popularity, expanding into a full-fledged themed restaurant franchise with multiple outlets across Taiwan. It's debatably the worst way to eat chocolate ice cream, but you've got to go... 😉
4) Eat what you can catch
Situated in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, you'll find the Japanese restaurant that offers you a discount for catching your own food with a net! 🐟
At Zauo, they've got an enormous tank made for guests to rent a fishing pole and try to hook a bite to eat. That way, you know for a fact that your fish is fresh!
After catching a flounder or red snapper, you can opt for the fish to be grilled, fried, or transformed into sushi upon request. 🍣
5) Dine in a glamourous treehouse
You'll find this fine dining experience in the forests north of Auckland, New Zealand, within pods that are only accessible via treetop walkway. About 32 feet from the ground, you can expect exemplary service catering to your every need, even if it's just a casual hors d’oeuvres-and-drinks setting you seek. 🍾
Even TV productions and weddings have been held at this magical venue... Hold up, did we just give you an idea? You're welcome.
The Redwoods Treehouse is used for private functions, but if there's an occasion for it, this venue is sure to create an unforgettable dinner in the trees.
6) Eat like a ninja
Designed to resemble a ninja village of the 15th century feudal days, Ninja New York offers a Japanese-American fusion dining experience coupled with dark alleys and clever contraptions within the maze of a restaurant.
The servers don black attire and bow endlessly, giving you an authentic ninja welcome. They even roam from table to table performing magic tricks with swords!
Eat like a ninja, and be like a ninja for the day.
7) Dine under the sea
This 16-seater gourmet restaurant in the Maldives has successfully redefined "ocean views". The clear dome enclosure is situated 16 feet below sea level, so you get to dine as you watch the Indian Ocean's manta rays, sharks and colourful sea creatures swim by. 🐠
The multi-awardwinning Ithaa Undersea Restaurant serves contemporary European fare in a six-course set dinner menu that includes premium indulgences like caviar ✨ You'll want to take someone incredibly special to the world's first all-glass restaurant in the ocean.
8) Eat amongst "hobbits"
Boracay, Philippines has its very own house of hobbits! The world famous restaurant is run by small sized staff that are making a living to support their families.
They face criticism on the daily, so show your support by dining at the Hobbit Tavern.
9) Eat, Drink, Laugh
At Dick's Last Resort, located in multiple locations across the US, the staff are actually rude to you on purpose. 😟
Your servers will get the chance to write "jokes" on paper hats that the guests will be wearing for the entire meal.
All in the name of fun, a party at Dick's is definitely a memorable one. This place is famous for its outrageous, surly, and energetic servers who dish out good grub, cold booze, and heaping helpings of sarcasm. 🙄
10) Dine amongst condoms
Bangkok has its very own condom-themed restaurant franchise called Cabbages and Condoms. Millions of colourful condoms decorate their mannequins, lamp shades, flowers and other objects around the place.
Not only do the restaurants offer excellent Thai lobster tom yum, but they also promote the health and safety aspects of condom use in a fun and amusing manner.
All proceeds from the restaurants are used to fund the social development programs of the Population and Community Development Association.
They even have Thai dance performances on Wednesdays.
11) Dine in the sky
This one's NOT for the faint-hearted. We're talking about flying dinner tables criss-crossing the skies of 45 countries and counting!
Okay, so maybe they're not flying, but these dinner tables are still suspended in the air, hanging by a crane 50m from the ground... but don't fret! These guys are strapped in suuuuper safely.
Just don't look down...
12) Dine like a giant kid
It's all about having a good time here. Melbourne's got our very own mini Tokyo for your dry ice spa, Nintendo gaming, bubble cup cocktail and karaoke needs. Built for big kids, you'll want to hit up Bosozoku HQ for your next night out. 🍻
