Museums

Who said culture came at a cost? There are two spectacular museums you can visit for free in Melbourne. Yes, the best things in life are indeed free.

  • National Gallery of Victoria (NGV)
Over 2.6 million visitors pop in each year, making the NVG Australia’s most visited art museum, as well as the largest and the oldest. With an extensive exhibition schedule and over 73,000 works of Australian, Indigenous and international significance, NVG has unique exhibits every few months, mosts of which can be viewed for free. Make sure you check the NGV website to see what exhibits are going on, as well as events they're hosting.

  • Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI)
Not into museums? ACMI may change your mind. This museum offers interactive and educational fun in film, TV, video games, digital culture and art. The exhibits are never ordinary and you're always guaranteed to get your money's worth.

Street-Art-1

Alleyways

It's a badly-kept secret that Melbourne has many charming alleyways which will lead you to a cultural adventure or tasty treat. Get lost through Hosier Lane, Degraves St or Centre Pl to check out the amazing and ever-changing graffiti. Keep your eyes wide open, some of these alleyways contain graffiti by world famous street artists.

Markets

No trip to Melbourne would be complete without a few hours spent at the South Melbourne or Queen Victoria Markets (though no local would ever call them by their full name. It’s the ‘Vic Markets’ or just ‘The Markets’ to you and I.) If you're around in the summertime, Vic Markets hosts Night Markets every Wednesday night. Make sure to stop by and buy Aussie momentos to take home with you.

Nature

A popular favourite, St. Kilda beach provides a great place to catch up on getting that Aussie glow. The shore offers a place to watch kitesurfers take to the waters or stop for refreshments at the end of the iconic pier. Our recommendation is to stay till dusk and head to the breakwater and check out the little penguin colony. They return back to their nests everyday as the sunsets.

If the beach is not your thing, Melbourne hosts amazing botanical gardens. The St. Kilda and Royal Botanical gardens are great places to go for a peaceful stroll, people watch, have a lovely picnic, or watch free musical concerts.

FUN Things to Do

Sport

Sport is akin to religion in Melbourne, including the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open and the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, to name a few.
footy-1

  • Australian Football League (AFL)
The footy, Australia's #1 sport, was birthed in Melbourne. So, yeah, Melbournians take it really seriously. If you say you don’t like footy, it just means you’ve never seen an AFL game live. It’s the only way to enjoy the atmosphere and appreciate the speed and physicality of the players. Not to mention the supporters.

  • Spring Racing Carnival
Everyone becomes a horse-racing expert at least once a year, with ‘hot tips’ of ‘sure-fire winners’ doing the rounds regularly during the Spring Carnival.

Relaxation

Need to get away from getting away? We have two words for you: retail therapy. Melbourne has heaps and heaps of shopping centers to help you cool down or stay out of the cold, depending on when you're visiting. The best places to shop in the CBD are Queen Victoria Center (QV)and Melbourne Central. Need more space to spread out your shopping wings? Chapel Street in South Yarra has plenty of shops, restaurants, café, and bars to help you destress from the stress of traveling.
